A primer on the underlying technologies that allow computer programs to work. Covers topics like computer hardware, combinatorial logic, sequential logic, computer architecture, computer anatomy, and Input/Output. Many coders are unfamiliar with the underlying technologies that make their programs run. But why should you care when your code appears to work? Because you want it to run well and not be riddled with hard-to-find bugs. You don´t want to be in the news because your code had a security problem. Lots of technical detail is available online but it´s not organized or collected into a convenient place. In The Secret Life of Programs, veteran engineer Jonathan E. Steinhart explores--in depth--the foundational concepts that underlie the machine. Subjects like computer hardware, how software behaves on hardware, as well as how people have solved problems using technology over time. You´ll learn: * How the real world is converted into a form that computers understand, like bits, logic, numbers, text, and colors * The fundamental building blocks that make up a computer including logic gates, adders, decoders, registers, and memory * Why designing programs to match computer hardware, especially memory, improves performance * How programs are converted into machine language that computers understand * How software building blocks are combined to create programs like web browsers * Clever tricks for making programs more efficient, like loop invariance, strength reduction, and recursive subdivision * The fundamentals of computer security and machine intelligence * Project design, documentation, scheduling, portability, maintenance, and other practical programming realities. Learn what really happens when your code runs on the machine and you´ll learn to craft better, more efficient code.
This program is read by the author. A rich and challenging new collection from the young award-winning poet. In those days I began to see light under every bushel basket, light nearly splitting the sides of the bushel basket. Light came through the rafters of the dairy where the grackles congregated like well-taxed citizens untransfigured even by hope. Understand I was the one underneath the basket. I was certain I had nothing to say. When I grew restless in the interior, the exterior gave. Dense, rich, and challenging, Katie Peterson’s A Piece of Good News explores interior and exterior landscapes, exposure, and shelter. Imbued with a hallucinatory poetic logic where desire, anger, and sorrow supplant intelligence and reason, these poems are powerful meditations of mourning, love, doubt, political citizenship, and happiness. Learned, wise, and witty, Peterson explodes the possibilities of the poetic voice in this remarkable and deeply felt collection. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Katie Peterson. The mental handbook is an award-winning book. But I realize the book itself wasn´t enough. I realize it´s not enough to simply tell you how to build mental toughness, confidence, and discipline.I know my daily Work On Your Game Podcast, though the best in its category and a giant step in the right direction, isn´t going to permanently change you by itself. I know for a fact that changing your life from the inside-out, starting with your mindset and how you see yourself, isn’t a second-person job.No matter how much I talk to you, inspire, and motivate you, nothing I say to you will have a much impact on your life as what you say to you. Which is why I created The Mental Workbook. Setting goals and working hard are requirements for achievement. Many people falsely believe that´s all there is to it. If that’s all it takes, why are so few people successful? There’s more - much more - to you reaching all your goals than just having them and working every day.The good news is, I know the exact formula for creating anything you want in life. I explain in detail how and why it works. I talk you through each step of the program. And, most importantly, I put you in position to do it yourself instead of just hearing about it. This is the exact program I follow myself, still to this day. I guarantee that it works. And I demand that you follow it. It’s called The Mental Workbook. Let’s start now. 1. Language: English. Studies indicate that 74% of the population is afraid of public speaking, and 68% fear dying. Certainly fear is an emotion that many struggle to overcome. The paradox of life is that what we fear, we eventually magnetize straight into our lives. What we don´t understand is that fear is often a pre-programmed response that roots back to childhood. Through repetition in a fear-based environment, our subconscious mind can actually be programmed to initiate a fear-based response to virtually any situation. Then, we basically run on autopilot, and often fears of various sorts dominate our behavior. We may fear losing money and eventually do. We may fear losing a relationship, and eventually jealousy creeps in and they´re gone. We may fear our health, actually creating illness. We may fear losing employment, only to eventually drive it further away. The good news is there are ways to recognize and re-program our paradigm to remove fear from our lives for good! This book is intentionally a quick listen. It gets straight to the point and doesn´t waste words. It shows you this connection between past programming and reveals 14 technologies, or tools, you can use on a daily, repetitive basis to program fear right out of your life. 1. Language: English. This Stay Sane in an Insane World guided self-hypnosis program was designed to assist the listener in releasing the stress, anxiety, and negative feelings associated with the news, politics and social turmoil, as well as to gain a sense of peace, optimism and healthy detachment from what is outside of one´s control. The hypnosis induction features isochronic tones, which are a form of brainwave entrainment to help achieve deeper relaxation. Also included within this program is an extended affirmations track, a meditation track (partly guided, with ancient Solfeggio frequencies), and as an extra bonus, an exciting and powerful drum-journey bodywork track. Using an alternate induction, hypnotic drum beats, and posthypnotic suggestions related to mind integration, this drum journey is designed to get the listener out of their brain and back into their body. Many find this useful for releasing energy blocks, healing, and integrating the mind, body, and spirit. Written and narrated by Anna Thompson, MA, MHP, LMHC, advanced clinical hypnotherapist. Life is short; live it well. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Anna Thompson. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/083279/bk_acx0_083279_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
The Apollo space program is the most famous and celebrated in American history, but the first successful landing of men on the moon during Apollo 11 had complicated roots dating back over a decade, and it also involved one of NASA’s most infamous tragedies. Landing on the moon presented an ideal goal all on its own, but the government’s urgency in designing the Apollo program was actually brought about by the Soviet Union, which spent much of the 1950s leaving the United States in its dust (and rocket fuel). In 1957, at a time when people were concerned about communism and nuclear war, many Americans were dismayed by news that the Soviet Union was successfully launching satellites into orbit. Among those concerned was President Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose space program was clearly lagging a few years behind the Soviets’ space program. From 1959-1963, the United States worked toward putting satellites and humans into orbit via the Mercury program, but Eisenhower’s administration was already designing plans for the Apollo program by 1960, a year before the first Russian orbited the Earth and two years before John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy addressed Congress and asked the nation to ´´commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.” Given America’s inability to even put a man in orbit yet, this seemed like an overly ambitious goal, and it isn’t even clear that Kennedy himself believed it possible; after all, he was reluctant to meet NASA Administrator James E. Webb’s initial funding requests. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Bob Barton. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/107033/bk_acx0_107033_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
In 2009, the Good News Club came to the public elementary school where journalist Katherine Stewart sent her children. The Club, which is sponsored by the Child Evangelism Fellowship, bills itself as an after-school program of ´´Bible study.´´ But Stewart soon discovered that the Club´s real mission is to convert children to fundamentalist Christianity and encourage them to proselytize to their ´´unchurched´´ peers, all the while promoting the natural but false impression among the children that its activities are endorsed by the school. Astonished to discover that the U.S. Supreme Court has deemed this - and other forms of religious activity in public schools - legal, Stewart set off on an investigative journey to dozens of cities and towns across the nation to document the impact. In this book she demonstrates that there is more religion in America´s public schools today than there has been for the past 100 years. The movement driving this agenda is stealthy. It is aggressive. It has our children in its sights. And its ultimate aim is to destroy the system of public education as we know it. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Joyce Feurring. There is an epidemic of fatigue running rampant in our society. Every morning, hundreds of thousands of women wake up to find themselves exhausted, overwhelmed, and overstressed. Groggily turning off the alarm, they reach for coffee, soda, or some other promise of energy. They suffer through the day—irritable, on edge, forgetful, depressed, and craving sweets. And then, at night, they have trouble sleeping. Diet and exercise don’t seem to change things—if they even have the energy to follow these programs. So what on earth is going on? In Are You Tired and Wired?, Marcelle Pick, co-founder of Women to Women—one of the first clinics in the country devoted to providing health care for women by women—and the author of The Core Balance Diet, focuses on the root cause of these symptoms: adrenal dysfunction. With all the stresses that exist today—from challenges at home and at work to environmental toxins to chronic health problems—the adrenal glands, which are responsible for providing the fight-or-flight hormones, can force the body to endure a constant flood of stress hormones that can ultimately lead to multiple health issues, especially severe fatigue. The good news is that through diet, lifestyle adjustments, and reprogramming of stressful emotional patterns this can all be fixed! Pick helps listeners identify which of three adrenal dysfunction profiles they fit—racehorse, workhorse, or flatliner—and then lays out an easy-to-follow, scientifically based program to help them restore adrenal balance, re-gear their metabolism, and regain their natural energy to live a happier and less-stressed life. 1.
